Have you seen all the crochet pocket shawls that are on the internet? There are so many! Of course, I just had to make my own version. 😉

Introducing the “Textured Trebles Pocket Shawl” made with Bernat’s Blanket yarn in Vintage White. This yarn is thick and super soft so your shawl will be fun to work up fast and keep you very warm.

This is a beginner pattern that uses just single crochet and treble crochet stitches in a 2-row repeat. (You’ll see that the stitch pattern and edging are very similar to the Recycle Crochet Floor Pillow here – another FREE pattern on this blog)

There is also a fun chunky twisted fringe edging along the bottom and a reverse single crochet edging along all the sides.

Skill Level: Easy

Measurements:

13″ wide

Fringe = 6″ long

(For total length see calculating notes below – based on person’s height)

Supplies:

Bernat Blanket Yarn – 3-4 skeins in “Vintage White”

L/8mm crochet hook

Notes:

Shawl is crocheted in 2 halves that are joined together along ending rows

Then the pockets are joined while working a reverse single crochet edging

Lastly the twisted fringe is added to the bottom edge of each pocket

Special Stitches:

Tr (treble crochet) = YO twice, insert hook into st indicated, YO, draw up a loop; (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times

Reverse Single Crochet = Insert hook into next st to the RIGHT (if left-handed insert hook into next st to the LEFT); YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook; (The ‘stem’ of the single crochet stitch will be stretched over to the right side (or left side if left-handed) – this ‘stretched stem’ creates the rope-like edging)

Instructions:

Shawl Base – Make 2:

Ch 28

Row 1: Sc in 2^nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (27 sc)

Row 2:  Ch 1, sc in each of next 5 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in each of next 7 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in next 7 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in next 5 sts. Turn. (3 ch-1 sps, 24 sc)

Row 3:  Ch 1, sc in each st and ch-1 sp across. Turn. (27 sc)

Row 4:  Ch 1, sc in each of next 3 sts; *tr in unworked sc 2 rows below (under ch-1 space), sk next st on current row, sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st, tr in same sc as previous tr 2 rows below; sk next st on current row; sc in each of next 3 sts;*  Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Turn.

Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until piece measures half of total length needed (see notes below for various lengths)  Fasten off.

Calculating the Length:

Total Length of Pocket Shawl is based on height of person wearing it:

Height of Person = total length of shawl (based on the fact that for most people their height is equal to the length from fingertip to fingertip)

Length of each Shawl base = Total Length divided by 2

For example, 5 feet tall = 60″ total length (30″ for each half)

Remember there is a little stretch/give to the shawl once it is being worn so you may want to make each base about 1″ shorter than your measurements – It’s always a good rule of thumb to pin the bases together and try it on before joining the bases together

Pocket -Make 2:

Work as for Shawl Base for a total of 16 rows. Fasten off. (You’ll be able to count 7 rows of the textured treble stitches)

Finishing:

Join Bases at Back:

With long length of yarn & yarn needle and Right Sides facing, whipstitch last rows of each shawl base together making sure to match up columns of the textured treble stitches; Use yarn length to sew tops of treble stitches together

Attach pockets and work edging:

Lay each pocket over first 16 rows of each side of shawl base and pin (or clip) in place

Starting at top right-hand corner of one of the pockets, work reverse single crochet (see Special Stitches) around entire edge of shawl making sure to work through both thicknesses along edges of both pockets. (If left-handed you would start at the top left-hand corner of one of the pockets)

Twisted Fringe Edging:

With Right Side of one pocket end facing, join with sl st to bottom corner of pocket;  *Pull out a 15” loop with hook (holding base of stitch with non-dominant hand); twist this long loop 40 times; Grasp center of twisted loop and bring hook down to base of loop; Let go of loop and it should twist up on itself; sl st in same stitch, sl st in next st;* Repeat from * to * across bottom edge of shawl (About 28 fringe lengths)

Repeat this twisted fringe edging along bottom of other pocket

With yarn needle and short length of yarn, whipstitch the first 1” to 3” of the top inside of the pocket opening closed (This helps prevent the pocket from gaping open and getting caught on things).

Tada! Your Textured Trebles Pocket Shawl is complete!
