Here is another mandala project that is very similar to the Mandala Driftwood Decoration (that you can see here) but this time it is combined with a practical purpose! This project is a cute keeper for all of your device cords.

Charging cords and headphone cords often get lost or mangled and tangled. With this Mandala Cord Taco you can keep them tidy and safe so they work for a long time and are easy to find. Doesn’t it look like a colorful taco? 🙂

Size 3 cotton crochet thread – 5 different colors (Version 1); 6 different colors (Version 2)

(Lizbeth by Handy Hands is a great crochet thread – you can purchase a wide variety of really pretty colors here)

C/2.75mm hook (This hook by Clover is great for working with thread – the silicone handle keeps your hand warm and prevents cramping)

Yarn needle

Small circle of felt

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

1 sew-on snap (Here is where you can purchase these)

Matching sewing thread and needle

Optional: Clip or key ring

Notes:

First mandala is crocheted in the round

Then a circle of felt is glued to the back and a snap is sewn on

Color changes every row

To change colors: Fasten off current color at end of each round. Join new color as indicated in beginning of each round – You’ll see below that you just start the first stitch of each round in the stitch indicated (no sl sts or chains) – just jump right in with that new color!

Special Stitches:

(These stitches are included in the pattern and written in bold)

Join with hdc (half double crochet): With slip knot on hook, YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

2-dc-CL (2 double crochet Cluster) = YO, insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop) 2 times; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

3-dc-CL (3 double crochet Cluster) = YO, insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop) 3 times; YO, pull through all 4 loops on hook

Join with sc (single crochet) = With slip knot on hook insert hook into st; YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Join with dc (double crochet) = With slip knot on hook, YO; insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

Steam Block = Lay project on a dry towel and hover a hot iron about 1-2″ above it while pressing on the steam button; Do not touch iron to project; Do this for about 10-15 seconds; Once project cools press out stitches and make sure all spaces open and even

Instructions:

(All stitches in bold are explained in “Special Stitches” section above)

Version 1 (slightly smaller):

Round 1:  In an adjustable ring work: [ch 5, (dc, ch 2) 9 times]; join with sl st to 3^rd ch of starting ch-5. (10 dc, 10 ch-2 sps – starting ch 5 counts as one dc and one ch-2 sp)

Round 2:  Join with hdc in any ch-2 sp; 2 hdc in same ch-2 sp; 3 hdc in each ch-2 sp around; join with sl st to top of starting hdc. (30 hdc)

Round 3:  Join with sl st in same st as previous sl st; Ch 2, 2-dc cluster, [(ch 5, 3-dc CL) in each of next 3 dcs] 9 times around ending with a sl st in top of 1^st cluster. (10 clusters or “petals”)

Round 4:  Join with sc in top of any cluster; (5 sc in next ch-5 sp, sc in next cluster) around; join with sl st to 1^st sc. (60 sc)

Round 5: Join with sl st in any st;  (Ch 5, sk each of next 2 scs, sl st in next sc) around ending with sl st in base of 1^st ch-5.  Fasten off. (20 ch-5 sps)

Version 2:

Round 1: Work as for Round 1 of smaller version

Round 2:  Join with dc in any ch-2 sp; 2 dc in same ch-2 sp; 3 dc in each ch-2 sp around; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (30 dc)

Round 3:  Work as for Round 3 for smaller version

Round 4:  Work as for Round 4 of smaller version

Round 5: Join with sc in any st; sc in each st around; sl st to 1st sc to end round.

Round 6:  Work as for Round 5 of smaller version

Finishing:

Steam block (see “Special Stitches” section above for how to steam block this project) mandala and let dry overnight

Using the mandala as a guide, cut out a circle of felt that covers up to the last round (but not including it)

Using a hot glue gun adhere felt to back (Wrong Side) of mandala

(Optional: You can also sew the felt on to the round right before the last one using sewing thread and needle)

Using sewing needle and matching thread, sew on snaps being careful to make sure they line up and allow the mandala to be folded in half

Optional: Using yarn needle and short scrap of matching yarn, whipstitch clip to middle of “cord taco” (see photo as a guide)

With the clip this Mandala Cord Taco can hang on your bag for easy use – And if you have a zipper inside your bag, you can hang it on that so it stays put. When your cord is being used, then unsnap your cord taco and it becomes a pretty mandala decoration!
