Summer Petals Shawl

Last summer (2019) when I was at the CGOA (Crochet Guild of America) Chain Link Conference everyone was raving about the multi-colored 1000 yard cotton yarn skeins manufactured by Scheepjes and I could quickly see why! The colors were bright and eye-catching and the gradual changes from one color to the next were so pretty. I was drawn to these giant skeins but delayed in buying any since I had many projects already in the works.

Well, later in the summer while I was browsing in ACMoore I came across similar yarns and they were on a great sale – only $5 each! Of course, now was my chance to purchase and start brainstorming on what kind of stitch I wanted to use for my 1000 yard shawl.

I wanted to create a shawl that was more than a simple triangle so that it lays over your shoulders and stays in place due to its shape. So, I experimented with these cluster stitches and how to use them to create increases each row.

I love how the clusters stitches create an illusion of flowers and petals. There is an extensive stitches explanation below – don’t let it scare you. Once you get the hang of it, the same grouping repeats over and over. Would you believe that after Row 5 this project is just a one row repeat?

Here is the video tutorial to take you through all of the stitches and steps:

Unfortunately, ACMoore went out of business this past year and this Nicole Stitch Studio no longer sells this type of yarn. So, here are some options for you (affiliate links) if you would like to make a shawl like mine – just click on the image or name to purchase:

Whirl – Cotton and Acrylic blend by Scheepjes
Another color by Scheepjes
ZuzuHobby Gradient Cotton Yarn

Skill Level: Intermediate

Measurements:

Neck to bottom edge: 22″ (55.88cm)

Across top edge: 50″ (127 cm)

Supplies:

1000 yards cotton yarn (see links and info above) – Fine (2)

C/2/2.75mm hook (This hook is great because it helps to prevent your hand from cramping with the silicone handle)

Large piece of cardboard or foam core board

Towels to cover entire board

Rust-proof straight sewing pins (about 150)

Notes about Pattern:

Shawl is worked from the top down

Shawl has 4 sections that have 1 increase per section per row (for a total of 4 increases each row)

If you use a 100% cotton yarn, I highly recommend the finishing stage of blocking your shawl to make the stitches lay flat and the spaces more definitive

**Note: You may need to experiment with this starting chain; If you tend to crochet tight chains, then ch 6; Otherwise, ch 5 – you want this chain to be about the same height or a little shorter than the other legs of the cluster, not longer; If it is too long, it will push out and not look right

Here is a quick snapshot that I took with my phone while I was blocking this shawl – notice how everyone point is pinned and the shawl is pulled taut

Finishing:

Wet entire shawl with cool water

Roll in a towel to remove excess water

Lay towels over cardboard (or foam core board)

Lay shawl on top of towels and pin along edges so stitches are opened and edging points are accentuated

My youngest daughter saw the shawl laying out on the floor in our home office and wondered why mom was doing ‘acupuncture’ on her crochet project! LOL!
You do need to use several pins for it to come out right. 🙂

Let dry completely

Now your Summer Petals Shawl is complete! I hope you are pleased with it and receive many compliments on it.
