Celtic Knot Pin

This Celtic Knot Pin features one of the simplest Celtic Knots you can weave so it works up very quickly for the perfect Irish accessory to any outfit.  I first created this design in 2013 in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and now I am re-publishing it here on the blog with video tutorials! (Click on the text in bold red, and it will take you to the video tutorial for that step of the project.)

Corkboard or foam core board (4” x 4”)

15 straight sewing pins

Yarn Needle

Sewing needle and thread

Small amount of matching felt

Yarn needle

Stitches:

Ch = chain

Sc = single crochet

Pattern:

Pin is made of two crocheted pieces.

First, a simple cord is crocheted and then woven into the Celtic Knot using the diagram which is then joined with the circle backing.

Crocheted Cord:

With Green color, ch 67

Working in back bar of the ch  sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. (66 sc).

Approximate length of cord = 15”

Weave Celtic Knot:

Place diagram on corkboard and secure with pins.

With Right Side facing up, place crocheted cord end on red star in diagram and secure with a pin.

Continue to lay cord down in pattern of the knot following the arrows.  Make sure to pass correctly at all crossings- under or over.

Adjust knot so that all spaces and outer cord lengths are even.

Secure all crossings with pins. Remove from corkboard, flip knot over and sew all crossings on the wrong side.

Weave in ends.

Circle Backing:

Work circle in a spiral using a stitch marker at beg of each round

Round 1:  With white color, make 6 sc in an adjustable ring

Round 2:  2 sc in each sc around; (12 sc)

Round 3: (2 sc in next sc,  sc in next sc) around; (18 sc)

Round 4: (2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc) around; (24 sc)

Round 5: (2 sc in next sc,  sc in each of next 3 sc) around; (30 sc)

Round 6:  *Sc in each of next 3 sc, ch 2, sc in back bar of 2nd ch from hk*; Repeat from * to * around; work invisible join (Cut yarn 4” from hook and remove loop from hook; insert hook into next st from wrong side of project, pull loop through project with hook making sure cut yarn tail is at back of project; YO, pull yarn tail through loop to fasten off). (10 points around circle backing)

Finishing:

(Optional: All finishing steps can be done with glue instead)

Secure knot piece to circle backing with matching yarn and yarn needle.
